Paid Call Firefighters (formerly called Volunteer Firefighters) are the backbone of fire protection in Shasta County. They’re local residents who train regularly, respond to emergencies in their own communities, and earn a stipend for their time.
SCFD has 17 volunteer fire companies serving 20 communities across the county. Most are staffed entirely by Paid Call Firefighters who live and work in those communities.
The process starts at your local Volunteer Fire Company. Attend a Training Night to meet the crew, see the station, and learn what it takes to become a member. You’ll get a full walkthrough of the process during that first visit.
Requirements are a combination of national standards, state and federal law, and local SCFD requirements. The department will walk you through all of it.

Joining SCFD as a Paid Call Firefighter costs nothing but your time.

All gear provided at no cost
All training provided at no cost
Coverage while engaged in SCFD activities
Limited liability coverage while on duty
Peer support through the Critical Incident Stress Management Program
Optional, limited vaccinations at no cost
$20 per session (up to 4 hours)
$40 per full day of training
$20 per call. Additional rates apply for longer commitments to state and federal wildland fire incidents.
A daily pay rate is available for station coverage at designated locations.

All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided at no cost. You don’t need to purchase any gear to join.
Yes. SCFD training counts toward career firefighter employment opportunities. Many paid call firefighters use their time with SCFD to build the qualifications needed to advance into career positions.
