detectorSmoke Detectors Available to Shasta County Residents

The Shasta County Fire Department (SCFD) received a grant from the Shasta Region Community Foundation in order to purchase smoke detectors to be given to residents of Shasta County who do not have working smoke detectors and /or cannot afford to purchase them.  With the recent time change also comes the reminder that it is time to change the batteries in your smoke detector.  Proper maintenance and testing of the smoke detectors should be conducted monthly.

Statistics show smoke detectors that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.  Smoke detectors can mean the difference between life and death in a fire.  Working smoke detectors cut the chances of dying in a fire in half.  Smoke alarms detect and alert people to fire in its early stages, giving them the time needed to escape the burning home safely.  Once firefighters arrive, their efforts are best served by suppressing the fire, rather than trying to locate someone who was not able to escape due to no alarm sounding.

A large number of the smoke detectors were given to visitors at a recent home and garden show, and the balance were distributed by SCFD volunteer and paid stations.  There are a large number of non-working or missing smoke detectors in homes visited by SCFD and CAL FIRE.  It is the goal of SCFD and it's firefighters to see that all homes have at least one working and maintained smoke detector to ensure that the residents of Shasta County do not become a fire death or injury statistic.
